HAPPY NEW YEAR
January 2010
A Happy New Year to all, and since it is a while we last updated the page, i find it would be a good idea to give a resume over the activities during the autumn.
Our intrepid travelers once again set the course for warmer climate, and returned to the Island of Tenerife for a full fourteen days of sunshine and warmth. which everyone enjoyed to the full. They returned with their batteries fully charged and ready for the long dark month ahead.
In November we had a group going to The National Concert Hall to see “HMS Pinafore” as staged by The Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society, very enjoyable.
Also towards the end of November, we had our Christmas Dinner Dance in The Ashdown Park Hotel. A most enjoyable evening for everyone. The Music was very good, and the dance floor was fullmost of the time.

New WEB Site for Seniors
A new WEB site for Senior Citizens has been lounched and is to be found on the address www.goldenireland.ie.
I have had a look around and it seem to be full of useful information covering information on f.ex Entitlements for us, such as ‘Free Banking’, Medical Card , Housing Aid etc.
There is a lot of cross references, Addresses and Telephone numbers to the County Councils and other organisations which are useful to have.
So check this site out, I am sure there will be some information you can use.
Summer at last
We have blue skies all around the sun is shining and we have record high temperatures for early June, still the job has to be done so here you have a kind of rapport of what we have been up to during the spring time.
We begin with the St. Patricks Day Parade where we participated under the banner ‘Older and Bolder’, we had a fair turn-out but we believe more of our members would have walked with us if the weather had been a little kinder to us, it was a bit chilly.
In early April we had a trip to the new Wexford Opera House, with a tour of the whole building from the stage to the rooftop Restaurant, and we finished the month with another visit to the Opera House, this time to see the Wexford Light Opera Society’s production of Mel Brooks ‘The Producers’ which every0ne enjoyed to the full.
In May the Bealtaine Festival took place, over three days, in an arrangement with the Ashdowne Park Hotel. The Hotel created a package with Bed and Breakfast and Dinner, for 1, 2 or three nights at very good rates, and this made people come from as far away as Co. Kerry and places in between. We had a Bowling
tournament, Art and Craft demonstrations, Photo exhibition and an exhibition of paintings by local Artists.
Evening entertainment were based around a Talent show, with some very good participants and not to forget the totally home produced play ‘Limbo House’ which got a tremendous reception. The Talent show held over three nights, had some fine performers, from singers though ti Irish Dancers. Our Judging panel were well-known people from the Town and furthermore totally neutral in relation to Gorey Active Retirement Association. The winner was Helen Graber, from the Morriscstle/Kilmuckridge area.
Finally in May the ever popular Spring Break which this year were held at The Clare Inn Hotel, Dromoland Co. Clare. And our members enjoyed a week of excursions to various places in Co. Clare, The Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle and a boat trip to Inishee r in the Arran Islands.

January Newsletter
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL. GOOD HEALTH AND A LITTLE WEALTH.
Well a new year and a new start to all our activities.
Our Go for life sessions will continue in the Ashdown Park Hotel on a Tuesday 11-12 noon followed by an hour of Whist for beginners. Also you may know we have Karen O’Reilly-Finley on Wenesday morning 10.30 am to 12.30 pm again in the Ashdown Park Hotel doing a magnificient job with her Card Craft sessions and I hear she may well introduce Neddle Craft this year, that’s for men only, I don’t think. Don’t forget the walk in the woods, no it is not Babe in the woods’ its us in the Courtown woods every Wednesday morning at 11am. Great fun and afterwards back in the Taravie for Tea/Coffee and try those beautiful scones, no cream you’re not allowed. Of course on a Monday we also go to the Leisure centre for AQUA AEROBICS, it is good for us gentle folk. Thursday afternoon if you are feeling a little bit fit or maybe you are browned off, try out the line dancing in the Old School House, Christ Church. Two hours of great (fun) enjoyment under the direction of Geraldine, beginners are very welcome. Give it a try, and you do not need a cowboy hat or Boots either. Our new play ‘LIMBO HOUSE’ is in rehearsal stage at the moment, well maybe not in rehearsal stage, let’s say it is in confinemenr stage at the moment. We may let it escape one night at the Story House soon, so watch notices. Oh yes the Story house is back on the second Tuesday of February. Anybody out there interested in Drama please contact George, we need more KINGS and QUEENS.Then on Fridays as usual our get together in the Loch Garman Arms, Drop in, get the latest news, have a cuppa, book a trip etc. See a friend, stay for lunch, go shopping (men go home). Irish Language , Mobile phone tuttion and Computerlessons will star back asap.
STAY WARM AND STAY WELL ALL WINTER
We have all felt the Chill of the winter and most of us wonder how to stay warm without spending all our savings on Fuel. We know the cheapest way is to add a layer or two of clothing and it is very important to keep our feet and hands warm, so extra socks and woolen mittens could be the cure in those areas. If you have to go out think of getting not only warm clothing but some which is also windproof. Many modern materials are not only warm but also windproof and also very important, they are this without being bulky. In the house it is important to keep the room in use as free from draught as we possible can. It will save on Fuel cost. To lower the temperature by one degree Centigrade, if the room heating is controlled by a Thermostat will also save money, but be careful, as we get older we do need some more heat than the younger ones, so do not go lower than 21 or 20 degrees. below this level, you will not only feel chilly, but your savings will be miniscule. Your bed can be warmed up with the help of a HOT WATER BOTTLE or a bag of grains. Or if you have an electric blanket use this. Remember never to use a Hot Water Bottle together with an electric blanket. Be very careful with open fires and with lit candles. Always place a Firescreen in front of the fireplace and remember never to leave a room with burning candles or have the candles close to flammable material such as curtains etc. Meals: Take great care in having at least one warm meal each and every day. Ideally you should have a good porridge in the morning and some fresh fruit. Your lunch could be a couple of sandwiches and your dinner could be a stew, a chop or a steak with potatoes and vegetables. Make sure your diet is balanced and you get both the protein and the fibre you need for a healthy life.
Christmas Time
We had a nice Christmas Party on the 9th of December in the Ashdown Park Hotel here in Gorey, and from the feed back the committee has had it seem that everyone enjoyed the dinner and the dance. We saw the dance floor was full to 100% for most of the afternoon and no-one complained about sore feet or legs. It now only remains to say Thank you! to Sydney O’Reilly for her effort in arreanging the party. And to all our members we send the best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a very Happy and Prosperous New Year and indeed a Happy 2009
Calendar
Gorey Active Retirement Association has issued an ‘Older and Bolder’ Calender. 10 Euro will reserve a copy for you, as long as our limited stock last.
Christmas Party:
Tuesday the 9th of December is party day for Gorey Active Retirement Association . Tickets are 30 Euro each, and must be purchased before the big day, as we are unable to sell any tickets at the Door. This is due to the requirement by the Hotel to know the numbers participating so they can prepare the meals. Tickets are available on Friday mornings in the Loch Garman Arms, at our Coffee mornings from 11am to 1pm.

World Heart Day
What a fine day, sunny and warm, so much so people even got a sweat, just from walking. About 30 people, young and not so young met at the Sli na Salinte point at Gorey Garda Station, and after a few photos had been taken, they began walking the route and with various detours they all arrived at the Ashdown Park Hotel where we had arranged a cup of Tea or Coffee with a freshly baked Scone with Jam and Cream. A voluntary collection was organised and totalled Euro 125.00 which duly were transferred to the Heart Foundation.
Positive Ageing Week off to a Great Start
just around 20 people met up for the first arrangement in our ‘Positive Ageing Week’ in the Woods at Courtown. The hearty souls went for a walk of about 1 hour through the wood and along the beach and finishing in the Tara Vie for a cup of Tea or Coffee plus some very tasty Scones with Jam and Cream.
