Here you will find information on our activities, both those taking place every week, and the more infrequently ones like outings to Theatres and Day trips.

Gorey ARA actively encourages the neighbouring smaller Active Retirement Associations to join us in our activities, which they so far have done, to the benefit of all sides.

Looking to the future! Gorey Active Retirement Association hope to develop as an intergrated part of life for all elder people in the area. We hope to be able to have our own facilities, where we can serve our Members and the community.

Gorey Active Retirement Association was founded in October 2002, when a group of interested people called a meeting in the Ashdown Park Hotel in Gorey.

A Committee was elected and began immediately with the task of building the organisation. A further meeting was called later in the month, where new members were invited to sign up. More than 200 persons applied for membership, and due to advise from the local FARA Organiser, a second group, "The Evergreens" were founded to cater for the excess number of prospective members. However from the beginning, there was a very close co-operation between the groups with regards to outings etc.

The daily activities were soon in a solid framework, with one group organising Bowling, 'Go for Life' and Aqua Aerobics, and the other organising Walks in the forest, Friday coffee mornings etc. Visits to Theatres and Day trips also became events at regular intervals. Spring and Autumn breaks where we go to various Hotels for a few days are also very popular. People like to see new places and enjoying the company of friends in the evenings at a dance or over a drink.
Some of our members has ventured further afield, to Spain, Prague and even across Canada from east to west.

Towards the end of 2004 it became clear the two groups were working so close together, that it would be natural to implement a merger. The memberships were consulted and it was agreed overwhelmingly that a merger should take place with effect from the vote at the AGM in January 2005.
